List of Common Examples of Semiconductor Devices

Here is the list of common examples of semiconductor devices,
  • SCR
  • DIAC
  • TRIAC
  • IGBT
  • Field Effect Transistor
  • Light Emitting Diode(LED)
  • PIN Diode
  • Photocell
  • Tunnel Diode
  • SSR(Solid State Relay)
  • Laser Diode
  • Phototransistor
  • Gunn Diode
  • Optocoupler

The semiconductor is neither a good conductor nor a good insulator. Its current conduction property lies between a conductor and an insulator. The other main characteristic of the semiconductor device is it can change its internal properties and construction while applying electrical current and voltage. Semiconductor materials or devices are made some special types of materials such as Silicon, Germanium, etc.

Examples of Semiconductor Devices

There are two types of semiconductor devices available. It is available in a single discrete device or in the form of an integrated circuit(IC) chip that consists of multiple semiconductor devices or components. As I told the conduction property of a semiconductor device can be manipulated or controlled by applying an electric field, magnetic field, heat, light, mechanical deformation, etc. The primary core behavior of a semiconductor device can be changed by the doping phenomenon during manufacturing.

We know that two charge carriers are responsible for the current conduction in a semiconductor device which is Electron and Hole. When a doped semiconductor consists of excess holes as a charge carrier is known as a P-type semiconductor and when a doped semiconductor consists of excess electrons as a charge carrier is known as an N-type semiconductor.

Semiconductor Devices used for Power Control
  • Rectifier Diode
  • SCR
  • IGBT
  • Tunnel Diode
  • Schottky Diode
As we know semiconductor devices are used so many applications. Current flow control and switching is a very popular application. For example, let's take an example of FET or Field effect transistor. It is a voltage-controlled device. So when we apply a voltage to the Gate terminal of the FET it can conduct current through its Source and Drain Terminals. Here, we electronically control the current flow.

Semiconductor device not only helps with switching or controlling but even helps to convert electrical energy into light energy and light energy into electrical energy. Yes, Light light-emitting diode or LED is an example of a semiconductor device that converts electrical energy into light energy. When a voltage is applied in the forward bias, it emits light. On the other hand, a photocell is an example of a semiconductor device that converts light energy into electrical energy. When light falls upon a photocell, it generates an electrical potential across it.

The main advantages of semiconductor devices are high-speed operation, compact size, low power loss, etc. For example, an electromechanical relay has mechanical arrangements and movements during the operation. So there are so many latching problems and power loss occurs. But in the case of a Solid State Relay which is a semiconductor device that has no mechanical parts and no movements during operation. So there is no latching problem and power loss occurs.
