Proximity Sensor Series Connection Diagram

Hi, in this article, we are going to see the connection diagram and wiring procedure for connecting multiple proximity sensors in series. A proximity sensor is a device that can detect the presence or absence of an object or its distance from the sensor without any physical contact. These sensors work by emitting a signal (such as infrared, ultrasonic, electromagnetic fields, or capacitance) and detecting changes in the returned signal when an object comes within the sensing range.

Connecting multiple proximity sensors in series is typically done for safety and redundancy purposes. When sensors are connected in series, the system ensures that all sensors must detect the correct conditions before an action is taken. This can prevent accidents and improve system reliability. For example, in an industrial setting, a machine might require that several safety doors are to be closed before it can operate. By connecting proximity sensors on each door in series, the machine control system can ensure that it will not start unless all doors are confirmed closed which enhances safety.

PNP Type Proximity Sensor Series Connection

Here, in the below wiring diagram, you can see the series connection of two PNP-type proximity sensors. Here, we have set the circuit in such a way that only when both of the sensors are activated the light will turn on. If any one sensor is activated and another is not then the light will not be turned off.

PNP Type Proximity Sensor Wiring in Series

Basically, When the PNP sensor is activated it connects the load to the positive supply voltage. In other words, it sources current to the load.

Connection Procedure

  1. The positive terminal of the sensor 1 is to be connected to the positive terminal of the power supply.
  2. The output terminal of the sensor 1 is to be connected to the positive terminal of the sensor 2.
  3. The output terminal of the sensor 2 is to be connected to the positive terminal of the load.
  4. The Negative terminal of all the sensors, load, and power supply are to be connected together.

NPN Type Proximity Sensor Series Connection

Here, in the below wiring diagram, you can see the series connection of two NPN-type proximity sensors. Here also, we have set the circuit in such a way that only when both of the sensors are activated the light will turn on. If any one sensor is activated and another is not then the light will not be turned off.

NPN Type Proximity Sensor Wiring in Series

Basically, when the NPN sensor is activated it connects the load to the ground (negative). In other words, it sinks current from the load to the ground.

Connection Procedure

  1. The Negative terminal of the sensor 1 is to be connected to the negative terminal of the power supply.
  2. The output terminal of the sensor 1 is to be connected to the negative terminal of the sensor 2.
  3. The output terminal of the sensor 2 is to be connected to the negative terminal of the load.
  4. The positive terminal of all the sensors, load, and power supply are to be connected together.
