Examples of Network Devices and Their Function

Here is a list of some common examples of Network Devices,
  • Modem
  • Router
  • Bridge
  • Switch
  • Network Hub
  • Brouter
  • Gateway
  • Repeater
  • Access Point
  • Network Card
  • Ethernet Card
  • Wi-Fi Card
  • Dongle
  • Hotspot Router
  • RTU(Remote Terminal Unit)

Network devices are those that help to connect multiple electronic devices to create a communication network and transmit data and information in a fast, secure, and right way. A device can be called a network device that will help to create any network but in this article, we are talking about electronic network devices. Of course, they are working with electronic signals. There are different types of network devices are available as we listed in the above section. Some of them are designed to perform a specific task and some of them are designed to perform multiple tasks. However, all of them work as a part of a network and follow the protocols of that network.
Here is the list of common functions the network devices actually have,
  • They receive data from a network and decode or convert it before sending it to the receiving device.
  • They route the signal to different network paths.
  • They can receive the data from a network and distribute it to different devices.
  • They may amplify the weak signal to transmit within a bigger network.
  • They may convert the signal from one form to another form for better transmission.
So there are different types of network devices that perform different tasks. Some of them are described below.

Modem

A modem is a networking device that modulates or demodulates the signals in a networking system. It basically helps to transmit digital data through an analog network path. At the sending end, it converts the digital signal into an analog signal. So the data will transmit through the analog network path. At the receiving end, there is another modem that will do just reverse means it again converts the received analog signal into a digital signal. So the receiving end device gets the data in digital form.

Router

A router has a very important role in a big networking system. In a big network system, if we see from a point there are so many different network paths connected together. So when a device sends data it will go to any other network path. So the router helps to transmit the data from the source to its proper destination by routing the signal to the right network path. Generally, they have stored the information about the network and destination devices so they can easily send the data to its proper destination. A router can connect two different topology networks. Generally, a router is not directly connected to any sending or receiving devices it is basically connected within the big network paths, and its main function is to establish a connection between different networks.

Switch

A switch is a multiport device that is connected to multiple sending and receiving end devices. It helps to make a network between those connected devices or connect them to an external network. A switch is used in internal networks such as LANs. For example, we can say a switch can receive data from a big network and distribute it to multiple devices connected to it. Generally, a switch work at the data layer for the internal network and it work at the network layer for the external network. Multiple switches are may connected to a router.
