What is Electronic Transformer?

Electronic Transformer is a passive electronic component or device designed for low power applications such as voltage step-up or voltage step down, isolating circuits, impedance matching, etc. The electronic transformer also works in the same principle as the electrical transformer works just the difference is they work with low voltage, low current, and in some cases with high frequency. Some electronic transformers are designed to operate with very high frequencies such as Kilo Herth(kHz), Mega Herth(MHz).

Some examples of electronic transformers are Small step Down transformers, Flyback Transformers, Line Output Transformers, High-Frequency Step-Up transformers, Impedance Matching Transformers, Audio Transformers, Pulse Transformers, Switch Mode Transformers, RF Transformers, etc.

Electronic Transformers are very compact in design, smaller in size, and light in weight. They can be used to maintain frequency response at different voltage levels, Noise cancellation, regulating power supply, converting, etc. Unlike, a large electrical transformer it does provide high power transformation, and high current circulation.

Electronic Transformer Price

The price of the electronic transformer depends upon the type, size, application, etc. For example, you can purchase a normal step-down transformer at the lowest price of 2$-3$. Whereas the RF transformers or other complex application purpose transformers are available for more than 15$.

How Electronic Transformer Works?

Normal Step Up/Down Transformer

A normal step up and step down transformer works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. A step-down transformer has two windings - primary winding and secondary winding. The primary winding has more no of turns than secondary winding. The primary winding is to be connected to the input power supply and the secondary winding is to be connected to the load.

The step-up transformer is just opposite to the step-down transformer. Its primary winding has fewer turns than the secondary winding. So, it will provide a higher voltage than its input voltage applied to the primary winding.

Also, remember that step up transformer circulate more current in primary winding than secondary winding whereas a step down transformer circulate more current in secondary winding than primary winding.

Isolation Transformer

The isolation transformer is different from a normal conventional transformer. Both windings of this transformer have the same no of turns. So it does not step up or step down the voltage. It just provides electrical isolation between two different circuits. We know that electrical energy transformer primary winding to the secondary of a transformer using electromagnetic induction. There is no electrical connection between the primary and secondary winding. So it provides complete isolation between two windings as there is no possibility of direct current between primary and secondary winding.

Flyback Transformer

The flyback transformer is a special type of step-up transformer built with some electronic components. It is capable to step up the voltage to a very high value such as up to 20000 V from a very low voltage such as 9V or 12V. Generally, an electronic switching circuit built with transistors is connected to its primary side that turned off or turned on the power supply or makes a switching supply. A diode is connected at the secondary side to stop the reverse current flow. Basically, we can say the flyback transformer converts the low voltage DC into a high voltage AC supply.

Electronic Transformer Use and Applications

1. Small electronic step-down transformers are used for voltage step-down purposes in portable devices such as emergency lights, battery charger circuits, etc.

2. Flyback Transformers are used in Switch Mode Power Supply Circuits, inverter circuits, motor controller circuits, etc.

3. Isolation transformers are used to provide isolation between two different circuits. It required when a high voltage power is controlled by a low voltage power.

4. Pulse transformers are used in power supply or power electronics applications, signal generation, etc.
