Ceiling Fan Wiring Diagram with Capacitor, Fan Regulator

Hey, in this article we are going to see a ceiling fan wiring diagram. The ceiling fan is a very essential electrical appliance in our home, office, or living places. In this wiring diagram of ceiling fan, we will see how to connect a capacitor with a fan motor and also how to connect the fan regulator. First of all, let's know about the ceiling fan. A ceiling fan is a squirrel cage single-phase induction motor. As we know that, a single-phase induction motor is not self-starting. So, a capacitor is required to start the motor. Also, note that the ceiling fan is a capacitor start and capacitor run motor. It means that the capacitor used with a ceiling fan not only helps to start the motor but it also helps to gain more torque during running.

Now, let's know step-by-step procedures.

Procedure to connect Capacitor with ceiling fan

By color code

1. First, identify the color of the wires. The red and black are the terminals of running winding. So, it does not required to connect the capacitor across it.

2. The blue and black are the terminals of the starting winding. Remember that, black wire is common for both windings.

3. Connect the capacitor across the blue and black terminals.

By checking resistance

1. Remember that the resistance of the starting winding is always more than the running winding.

2. So, first check the resistance across the black terminal and any other terminal. Note down the value.

3. Then check the resistance across the black terminal and other rest terminals. Note down the value.

4. Now check which given the more resistance value and mark it as the starting winding.

5. Now, connect the capacitor to the terminals across which you got high resistance.

Procedure to connect the ceiling fan with power supply

If you do not want to connect the fan regulator, follow the below connection procedure

1. Connect the grounding or earthing terminal of the fan to the main earthing of your home. If your ceiling fan doesn't have any earthing terminal then it is best to connect the earthing terminal to the metallic body of the fan.

2. Connect the neutral or black terminal of the fan to the neutral terminal of the power supply.

3. Connect the phase or red terminal of the fan to the phase terminal of the power supply with an SPST switch connected in series. This will help you to turn on or turn off the fan when you required it.

If you want to connect a fan regulator also, then the above diagram will help you. Also, follow the below procedure.

1. Connect the phase terminal of the power supply to the anyone terminal of the SPST switch.

2. Connect another terminal of the switch to any one terminal of the fan regulator.

3. Connect another terminal of the fan regulator to the phase red terminal of the ceiling fan.

4. Connect the ground and neutral terminals as I already discussed in the above section.
