Why Solar Panels Blue or Black in color and has many White Lines

You may notice that most of the solar panels are blue in color sometimes they are also black in color. You may also notice, that solar panels have many white lines. So today we are going to discuss about it. A solar panel contains a lot of solar cells which are also called photovoltaic cells. Generally, solar cells are placed in such a way that the connection to all cells will be easy and simple. Solar cells are placed in a solar panel with a grid pattern.

Why Solar Panels are Blue or Black in color?

The solar panels are blue in color because they are made using Polycrystalline(which is a type of Silicon). The blue color has an anti-reflective property which increases the absorbing capacity and efficiency of the solar panel.

The raw silicon is melted and poured into a mold. The pouring process of the melted silicon does not align perfectly therefore much individual silicon crystal is created within the mold. The individual silicon crystals make the solar panel blue in color.

The solar panels which are black in color use the Monocrystalline. Black solar panels are more efficient than blue solar panels because black color can absorb more light than blue color.

So,

  • The Blue Solar Panels uses Polycrystalline.
  • The Black Solar Panels use Monocrystalline.

Mostly blue solar panels are used because Monocrystalline is more costly than Polycrystalline. The manufacturing of a Monocrystalline Solar Panel or Black Solar panel is difficult and costly.

Why does Solar Panel have many White Lines?

Actually, the solar panel does not have any white lines, they are maybe the gaps between solar cells or the fingers or the busbar. Fingers and Busbar are nothing but electrical conductors.

From a distance, the gaps between the solar cells are shown as white lines. The gaps between the solar cells are necessary because of the thermal expansion of the solar cells when they are heated.

The fingers are thin metallic lines that connect the individual solar cell to the busbar or they collect energy from the cell and deliver it to the busbar.

The busbars in a solar panel are made of aluminum or silver-plated copper. The busbars are placed perpendicular to the fingers. The output of a solar panel is taken from the busbar.
