Ring Socket Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure
Hi, in this article, we are going to see the Ring Socket Wiring Diagram, which means we will connect multiple power sockets together to make a ring circuit. Here, we will describe step by step connection procedure also. The ring socket circuit is basically an electrical wiring configuration commonly used in residential and commercial buildings for distributing power to multiple sockets or outlets. Here, multiple power sockets are connected in such a way that it forms a loop (or "ring") where the wiring starts from the consumer unit (MCB or fuse box), goes through each socket in a circuit, and then returns to the consumer unit, completing the ring.
When multiple power sockets are connected in a ring circuit, the load is shared between two paths (forward and return). This allows the use of cables with smaller cross-sectional areas while still handling significant loads.
The ring circuit also ensures that the load is distributed evenly which reduces the risk of overload at any single point. If a break occurs in one section of the ring circuit, the other side can still supply power to the sockets which provides some level of redundancy.
Ring Socket Wiring Diagram
Here, you can see the wiring diagram for multiple power socket connections in a ring circuit.
Here, you can see in the above wiring diagram, we have connected eight power sockets in a ring circuit. You can see the main input power supply is connected to the input of the DP MCB. Then the output from the MCB is connected to the power socket. Here, all the power sockets are connected in parallel. Finally, the end of the circuit returned to the MCB and formed a loop or ring circuit.
Ring Socket Connection Diagram
Here, in the below diagram, you can see the actual connection of all the power sockets and MCB.
Connection Procedure
- First of all, turn off the main power supply.
- Connect the main power supply to the input of the DP MCB.
- Now connect the output of the MCB to the first power socket. As here, we have used a switch with the socket so the line terminal should be connected to the switch. The output from the switch should be connected to the 'L' terminal of the socket. The neutral terminal from the MCB should be connected directly to the 'N' terminal of the socket. The earthing wire should be connected to the 'E' terminal of the socket.
- Run another cable from the first socket to the next socket and connect the next socket by following the connection procedure as explained in step 3.
- Connect all the power sockets in the same manner.
- Finally, return the circuit to the MCB to make a loop or ring by connecting the last socket to the MCB. To do this, connect the live wire from the socket to the line output of the MCB, connect the neutral wire from the socket to the neutral output of the MCB, and connect the earth wire from the socket to the earth busbar.
