Hostel Lighting System Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure

In this article, we are going to see the hostel lighting system wiring diagram, circuit arrangement, and connection procedure. In hostels, designing the lighting system in a different way play a special role during study time. It's all about helping students focus on their studies instead of going to bed too early.

In the hostel, there is a switch called the "master switch" that is installed in the warden's room. The room lights also have their own switches(two-way switches) that are installed in each room.

During regular hours, students can turn their room lights on and off using the two-way switches. But when it's study time, the warden switches ON the master switch. That means the lights can't be turned off in the rooms. It's like a gentle reminder to study with good lighting.

When study hours end, the warden switches OFF the master switch. Then, students can control their room lights again.

Wiring Diagram

Here, you can see the wiring diagram of the hostel lighting system. Here, we have used only four lights for four rooms to make the wiring diagram simple. I know there are so many rooms. Remember all the lights and switches are connected in the same way.

Hostel Lighting System Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure

Main Components
  1. Four Lights for Four Rooms
  2. Four Two Way or SPDT Switches(one for each room)
  3. A Master Switch(basically a one-way switch or SPST switch)

Connection Procedure

1. The neutral terminal of all the lights is connected to the neutral terminal of the power source directly.

2. The phase or live terminal from the power source is connected to one terminal of the Master Switch and the upper terminals of all the two-way switches.

3. The other terminal of the master switch is connected to the lower terminals of all the two-way switches.

4. The middle terminal of each two-way switch is connected to the phase terminal of their respective room lights.

Working Principle

To understand the working principle, we can take an example of any one lamp. For example, when the master switch is off and the two-way switch 1 in the first room can be operated to turn off and turn on the light.

When the master switch is off and switch 1 is pressed in the down position bulb 1 will be in off condition because the bulb will get not any phase supply as the master switch is off. But when the switch is pressed at the up position the light will glow as it will get the phase supply.

Now when the master is turned on, the bulb cannot be turned off by operating the two-way switch because at every position it will get the phase supply. This same principle is applied to all the room lights.

Hostel Lighting Circuit Operating Procedure

Operating Procedure

Regular Hours: Each student can control the light in their room independently using the two-way switch near their room's entrance.

Study Hours: The warden flips the master switch ON, which turns ON all the room lights simultaneously, and they cannot be turned off individually through the two-way switches during this time.

Post-Study Hours: The warden flips the master switch OFF, restoring individual control through the two-way switches in each room.
