[BEST] Application and Advantages of Amplitude Modulation

Amplitude Modulation, Amplitude Modulated signal, Amplitude Modulation process

There is a huge application of Amplitude Modulation(AM) in Broadcasting Transmission over a large distance. The great advantages of Amplitude Modulation(AM) are, easy to implement, cheaper. The noticeable disadvantage of Amplitude Modulation(AM) is noise creation. In this article, you will know many important applications, advantages, and disadvantages of Amplitude Modulation(AM).

Applications of Amplitude Modulation(AM)

1. The main application of Amplitude Modulation(AM) is, it is used for transmitting data or information via radio wave.

2. Amplitude Modulation(AM) used in the electronic analog communication system.

3. Amplitude Modulation(AM) is used in earlier days to transmit voice by radio.

4. Amplitude Modulation(AM) is used in old Televisions to control the pixels on the screen.

5. It is used in some devices such as Citizens band radio, two-way radio, computer modems.

6. It also used in the medium wave AM radio broadcasting.

7. Amplitude Modulation(AM) process used in the analog mixer for audio control.

8. There is a very important application of Amplitude Modulation(AM) in AM Radio Communication.

9. Amplitude Modulation(AM) used in two-way communication over the radio in Aircraft

10. It also used in Air Band Radios.

11. It is used in earlier days to transmit Morse Code.

12. It also used in the telephone system in earlier days.

13. This procedure is used in police and navy dispatch radio system.

Advantages of Amplitude Modulation(AM)

The main advantages of Amplitude Modulation(AM) are,

1. The components used for the Amplitude Modulation(AM)  are very cheaper so the overall cost of the circuit is low.

2. Modulator circuit is very simple and also simple in operation.

3. This process is suitable for both audio and video signal.

4. The Amplitude Modulated signal can be easily demodulated at the receiver side using a very simple circuit with few components.

5. The Amplitude Modulation(AM) process can be used for all short, medium, and large distance transmission system.

6. The implementation of this process is also very simple.

Disadvantages of Amplitude Modulation(AM)

1. Noise creation
2. Electromagnetic Interference
3. Low efficiency
4. Inefficient Power Use or power loss

Why we need Amplitude Modulation?

The moderation of the amplitude of a signal is called Amplitude Modulation or AM. Amplitude Modulation is performed when we transferring data or information via wire or wirelessly. Generally, Amplitude Modulation is done to help the receiver machine to identify the data.

When we transmitting any data through a wire or using a wireless connection, it always carries an analog signal even it is digital communication.

Let's take an example that is a computer modem. We know that our computer works in digital form. So when we send any data from our computer through the Internet, first the digital data is converted into an analog signal by the modem and it sends via the communication system.

In the waveform of the Amplitude modulated signal, you may see the amplitude is not constant, sometimes it low and some times it high. So if we transmitting digital signal the high amplitude represents the digital data '1' and the low amplitude represents the digital data '0'.

How Amplitude Modulation is done?

There is a very simple process of Amplitude modulation. here you can see a simple amplitude modulator circuit using a transistor

amplitude modulation circuit

You can see in the above diagram the circuit needs two signal one is carrier signal and another is a sinusoidal signal. By comparing two signals the modulator circuit produces the amplitude modulated signal.
