How to Use This Calculator?


To use the calculator, follow the below steps:

1. First of all, Select the desired material from the "Material" dropdown list. The available options are Aluminum, Brass, Copper, Gold, Iron, Nickel, Platinum, Silver, Stainless Steel, Nichrome, Tungsten, Tin, Silicon, and Others.

2. If you selected "Other" as the material, you can manually enter the resistivity of the material in the "Resistivity" field. Otherwise, the default resistivity value for the selected material will be pre-filled. The resistivity represents the inherent electrical resistance of the material.

3. Don't forget to choose the appropriate unit for resistivity from the "Resistivity" dropdown list. The available options are ohm-m (Ω⋅m), ohm-cm (Ω⋅cm), and microohm-cm (μΩ⋅cm).

4. Now Enter the permeability of free space in the "Permeability of free space" field. This value determines the magnetic permeability of the surrounding space. It already is pre-filled with a default value if you don't have one.

5. Select the unit for permeability from the "Permeability of free space" dropdown list. The available options are h-m (H/m) and h-cm (H/cm).

6. Enter the frequency at which you want to calculate the skin depth in the "Frequency" field.

7. Here also, choose the appropriate unit for frequency from the "Frequency" dropdown list. The available options are Hz, kHz, MHz, and GHz.

8. Enter the relative permeability of the material in the "Relative permeability" field. This value represents the material's ability to concentrate magnetic flux compared to free space. The default value is pre-filled. When you select material "Other" then you need to put the value manually.

9. Select the unit for relative permeability from the "Relative permeability" dropdown list. The only available option is "None" since the relative permeability is dimensionless.

10. Now, Click the "Calculate" button to perform the skin depth calculation based on the provided inputs.

11. To reset the calculator and clear all the fields, click the "Reset" button.

Remember that Skin depth refers to the depth at which the current density decreases to approximately 37% (1/e) of its surface value.

Suppose we want to calculate the skin depth of copper at a frequency of 1 MHz. 

We know that the resistivity of copper is approximately 1.68e-8 ohm-m, the permeability of free space is 1.257e-6 H/m, and the relative permeability of copper is 0.999991 (dimensionless).

So using the formula, we can calculate the skin depth as follows:

Skin Depth (in meters) = √(1.68e-8 / (Ï€ * 1e6 * 1.257e-6 * 0.999991))

Performing the calculations:

Skin Depth (in meters) = √(1.68e-8 / (3.14159 * 1e6 * 1.257e-6 * 0.999991))
= √(1.68e-8 / 3.95959249416714e-6)
≈ √4.249984265879732
≈ 0.0652363504805555 meters

Since the skin depth is typically expressed in smaller units, let's convert it to millimeters:

Skin Depth (in millimeters) = 0.0652363504805555 meters * 1000
≈ 65.24 millimeters

Therefore, the skin depth of copper at a frequency of 1 MHz is approximately 65.24 millimeters. This means that within the first 65.24 millimeters of the copper material, the current density will decrease to about 37% of its initial value. Beyond that depth, the current density will continue to decrease further.
