AC machines are those that operate with alternating current or AC power supply. It consumes electrical energy in the form of alternating nature to do some useful work. Even the machines that converts any other type of energy into electrical energy in the form of alternating current can be called AC Machine such as AC Generators.

An alternator is an electrical machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. When the rotor of the alternator is rotated by an external prime mover, then an alternating voltage is generated in its stator coil. As the alternator generates electricity in the form of an AC supply it can be called an AC machine.

The electrical transformer is also an example AC machine. A transformer is a machine whose main function is to transfer electrical energy from one circuit to another circuit without any contact and step up or step down the voltage level while keeping constant the power and frequency. There are various types of transformers are available in the market according to the function, no of phases, etc.

We know the induction motor works on the principle of electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic induction is only possible when there is an AC supply available. So, the induction motor works with an AC supply only. Basically, it has two coils stator coil and a rotor coil. The AC power is supplied to the stator coil. Due to the electromagnetic induction principle, an electromagnetic flux will be induced in the rotor coil. And the interaction between stator flux and rotor flux will create a torque on the rotor to rotate it.

The old analog voltage stabilizers are also AC machines as they are built with transformers and used to stabilize the AC voltage. Basically, the voltage stabilizers are used in home, office, and rural areas where low voltage problem occurs. When the utility voltage goes low the stabilizer helps maintain a constant output voltage by stepping up the voltage using a transformer.

The refrigerator used for our household purpose could be an example of an AC machine. It has a compressor and other auxiliary components those are consumed an AC power supply for their operation. A refrigerator is a machine that helps to decrease the temperature in a particular place using the thermodynamic principle. Basically, the compressor is built with an AC motor, and it compresses and circulates the refrigerant.

The ceiling fan uses a squirrel cage single-phase induction motor that works with an AC power supply. That is why it is also an example of an AC Machine. Like a three-phase induction motor, a single-phase induction motor is not self-starting. It basically has two separate coils - 1. Starting Coil and 2. Running Coil. The running coil is directly connected to the single-phase AC power supply. And the starting coil is connected with a capacitor in series. The capacitor helps to create a starting torque to start the rotation of the ceiling fan.
