Ignition Switch Wiring Diagram and Connection for Pins



An Ignition Switch was also known as a starter switch or start switch is a key-operated switch that is used in vehicles to power up or turn off the electrical system. It controls power for starters, ignition systems (such as coils), and other accessories(such as lights, fans, radios, etc). Basically, it required a key that should be an exact match with it otherwise it would not work. As it controls the electrical system of the car so wiring of the ignition switch and its terminal connection is very important. So the main purpose of the ignition switch is to control the power of different parts of the vehicle during turn on or turn off.

Here, you can see the wiring diagram of the ignition switch for 4 poles. It is the most standard connection used in most of the cases.

At the backside of the switch, you can see the four pins named as,
  1. ACC - Accessories
  2. IGN - Ignition
  3. ST - Starter
  4. BAT - Battery

The color codes for wire differ for different countries. Here, 
  • Red Color is used for accessories connections.
  • Yellow Color is used for battery connections.
  • Green Color is used for Starter Connection.
  • Sky Color is used for the Ignition system.

Connection Guide


1. The terminal named as ACC is to be used for the power up to the accessories such as Lights, Fans, Radio, Power Windows, etc.

2. The terminal named as ST is to be connected to the starter circuit such as the starter solenoid.

3. The terminal named as IGN is to be connected to the Ignition system such as the Ignition Coil.

4. The terminal named as BAT is to be connected to the Battery.

It is recommended that before connecting any system or making a connection you just read the actual drawing of the system.


Here are some symptoms of a bad ignition switch. So after looking at these symptoms, you should go to the technician for the replacement or repair,
  • Difficulty turning the key
  • The engine would not start when you operate the key
  • Sailent Starter Motor when you operate the key
  • The electrical system doesn't turn on when you turn On the switch.

Now, let's learn about the five positions an ignition switch has,
  • First Position - Lock - When the key is in the first position it is in the locked condition so the electrical system would not be turned on.
  • Second Position - Accessories - When the key is turned to the second position the accessories of the vehicle will turn on.
  • Third Position - Ignition - When the key is turned to the third position the ignition system will get the power and activate.
  • Fourth Position - When the key is turned to the fourth position the starter will get the power so the engine of the vehicle will be started.
