What is DPDT Relay? Double Pole Double Throw Relay


A DPDT Relay or Double Pole Double Throw Relay is a type of relay that has two inputs and four outputs. Each of the inputs has corresponding two outputs. Including the coil terminals, it has a total of eight terminals. Both the inputs are isolated to each other and both of the output Paris are also isolated to each other. The input 1 has corresponding outputs of 1.1 and output 1.2(among these one NC and one NO). Same as the input 2 has corresponding outputs 2.1 and 2.2(among these one NC and one NO).

The DPDT relay can control four electrical or electronic circuits. It can provide both switching(on/off) and signal routing functions. The DPDT relay has two common terminals, two NC terminals, and two NO terminals. Both of the inputs and output pairs are operated simultaneously.

Now, let's see the connection diagram of DPDT Relay to understand its working principle easily.

Here, you can see the coil of the relay is connected to a battery series with a switch named as S1. Two different circuits are connected with two different inputs and output pairs. Circuit 1 consists of battery1, LED1, and LED2. Circuit 2 consists of battery 2, LED3, and LED4

When the switch S1 is in the off condition, the coil of the relay will be not energized so the LED2 and LED4 will be in On condition as they are connected with NC terminals, and LED1, LED3 will be in off condition.
When the switch S1 is turned on, the coil of the relay will be energized, so the LED2, LED4 will be turned off and the LED1, LED3 will be turned on.

DPDT relays are used in complex electronic circuits and devices.
