Symbols: Thyristor, SCR, DIAC, TRIAC, SCS, IGBT

Symbols - Thyristor, SCR, DIAC, TRIAC, SCS, IGBT

A thyristor is a solid-state semiconductor device. It is used as an electronic control switch in electrical or electronic circuits. Except for the IGBT, SCR, DIAC, TRIAC, and SCS are the parts of the thyristor family. They all have different functions, characteristics, and applications. In this article, we are going to see the symbol of those semiconductor devices.

Thyristor Symbol

A thyristor is a Four-layer and three-terminal device. It has four alternating layers of P-Type and N-Type materials. The three terminals are named as Anode, Cathode, and Gate. Generally, the anode is connected to the 'P-Type' material, the cathode is connected to the 'N-Type' material, and the gate is connected to the other 'P-Type' material.

You can see the symbol of the Thyristor looks like a PN junction diode. Just it has an additional gate terminal. It also can conduct the electrical current in one direction only, but a power supply is applied to the gate terminal.

SCR Symbol

SCR means Silicon Controlled Rectifier. When we talk about the thyristor family, the term 'SCR' comes first. Even thyristor is also called an SCR. You can see the symbol of SCR is the same as the Thyristor. SCR has four layers - two P-type layers and two N-type layers. Like a PN junction diode, it is also used for rectification purposes, that is why it is called a Silicon Controlled Rectifier.

DIAC Symbol

DIAC stands for Diode for alternating current. It is a bidirectional device. It starts to conduct electrical current when the voltage across it exceeds its break-over voltage or VBO. You can see the symbol of DIAC consists of two diodes facing opposite to each other.

TRIAC Symbol

TRIAC stands for Triode for alternating current. It is also a bidirectional device and can conduct current in both directions but only when a voltage is applied to its gate terminal. It is a three-terminal device. Here, you can see the symbol of TRIAC.

SCS Symbol

SCS stands for Silicon Controlled Switch. It is a four-terminal device. Basically, it is a Silicon Controlled Rectifier that has an additional gate terminal. Here, you can see the symbol of SCS.

IGBT Symbol

IGBT stands for Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor. It is a powerful electronic device that is used for very high voltage and high power applications. Here, you can see the symbol of IGBT.
