All Types of Transistor Symbol and Diagram

Hey, in this article, we are going to see all types of transistor symbols. The symbol of Transistor is very important as it helps to read circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams, etc. A transistor is an electronic semiconductor device. Its main function is to switch or amplify electronic signals. The transistor is a very useful active electronic component and is used in all digital electronic circuits as well as some analog electronic circuits. The transistor is a three-terminal device and it requires an external voltage or biasing for its operation. According to construction, operation, working principle, and applications, there are so many different types of transistors available.

BJT Symbol

BJT or Bipolar Junction transistor is the simplest transistor among others. It is a three-terminal device named - Collector, Base, and emitter. Here, you can see the symbol of BJT or Bipolar Junction Transistor.

NPN Transistor Symbol

NPN transistor is a type of bipolar junction transistor. It has two N-type layers and one P-Type layer. NPN transistors are most suitable for high-frequency applications and have so many advantages over PNP Transistors. Here, you can see the symbol of the NPN transistor.

PNP Transistor Symbol

PNP transistor also a type of Bipolar Junction Transistor. It has two P-Type layers and one N-type layer. In some electronic circuits, the PNP transistor is more useful than the NPN transistor. Here, you can see the symbol of the PNP Transistor.

N-Channel JFET Symbol

Field Effect Transistor or FET is a voltage control device. This means when a voltage is applied to its gate terminal it starts conducting current. There are two types of Field Effect transistors - JFET and MOSFET.
In an N-channel JFET electrons is the charge carrier. Here, you can see the symbol of N-Channel JFET.

P-Channel JFET Symbol

In a P-Channel JFET, holes are the majority charge carrier. The P-channel JFET has a P-type channel region. The channel is formed by a bar of p-type material between two n-type regions, creating a P-N-P junction. In a P-channel JFET, the source and drain terminals are connected to the p-type regions, and the gate terminal is connected to the n-type region. The gate-source voltage (VGS) is typically negative to control the channel current. Here, you can see the symbol of P-Channel JFET.

UJT Symbol

UJT or Unijunction Transistor is also a three-terminal device but it has only one junction. UJT is an ultra-fast electronic switch. A UJT is a two-junction, three-layer semiconductor device with a unique construction. It consists of a bar of n-type material with a p-type region located near its center. This p-type region is called the "intrinsic" region. Its symbol also represents that the two ends of the n-type bar act as the emitter (E) and the base 1 (B1), while the p-type region serves as the base 2 (B2). Here, you can see the symbol of UJT.

MOSFET Symbol

MOSFET or Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor is mainly designed for fast switching and high current carrying features. It has a metal oxide layer. There are mainly two types of MOSFET - Depletion Type MOSFET and Enhancement Type MOSFET.

Depletion Type MOSFET has two types - Depletion type N-Channel MOSFET and Depletion type P-Channel MOSFET

Symbol of Depletion mode N-Channel MOSFET

A depletion mode N-Channel MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) is a type of MOSFET where the channel is already formed and conducts current when no voltage is applied to the gate terminal. Here, you can see the Depletion type N-Channel MOSFET Symbol.

Symbol of N Channel depletion Type MOSFET

Symbol of Depletion mode P-Channel MOSFET

The P-channel MOSFET has a P-type channel region. The channel is formed by a p-type semiconductor between two n-type regions (source and drain). Here also the channel operates in conductive mode when there is no voltage. Here, you can see the Depletion type P-Channel MOSFET Symbol.

Symbol of P Channel depletion Type MOSFET

Enhancement Type MOSFET has two types - Enhancement Type N-channel MOSFET and Enhancement Type P-Channel MOSFET

Symbol of Enhancement Type N-channel MOSFET

An enhancement mode N-channel MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) is just opposite to the depletion type MOSFET. Here the channel is normally non-conductive and requires a specific gate voltage to turn it on. In other words, it operates as a normally "off" device. Here, you can see the Enhancement Type N-channel MOSFET Symbol.

Symbol of N Channel enhancement Type MOSFET

Symbol of Enhancement Type P-channel MOSFET

The P-channel MOSFET has a p-type channel region. The channel is formed by a p-type semiconductor between two n-type regions (source and drain). Here, also the channel operates in non-conducting mode when there is no voltage. Here, you can see the Enhancement Type P-channel MOSFET Symbol.

Symbol of P Channel enhancement Type MOSFET

Symbol of NPN Darlington Transistor

Darlington transistor is made of two bipolar junction transistors. But it acts as a single transistor. It also has only one base terminal, one emitter terminal, and one collector terminal. There are two types of Darlington transistors - NPN Darlington Transistors and PNP Darlington Transistors. The main difference between a Darlington transistor and a normal bipolar junction transistor is, a Darlington transistor provides a very high current gain over a normal transistor.

Symbol of NPN Darlington Transistor

Symbol of PNP Darlington Transistor

A PNP Darlington transistor consists of two PNP transistors connected in a Darlington pair configuration. The emitter of the first transistor is connected to the base of the second transistor, and their collectors are connected together. Here, you can see the PNP Darlington Transistor Symbol.
