Application and Uses of Galvanometer

Hey, in this article we are going to know the important applications and uses of galvanometers. Basically, the galvanometer is a measuring instrument. The galvanometer is an electromechanical device that has a pointer on a rated scale. The pointer moves when an electric current flows through its coil in a constant magnetic field. So, generally, the galvanometer meter measures the electric current. Analogue Ammeter is the updated version of the galvanometer just the difference is galvanometer is not calibrated whereas the ammeter is calibrated.

Galvanometer Uses

A galvanometer is mainly used to measure electric current. Other applications are here,

1. Galvanometer is used in school, and college laboratories for current measurement purposes and to understand the basic working principle of measuring instruments. A galvanometer is also best to know the direction of the flow of current.

2. Galvanometer is used for positioning and controlling system in modern automobiles, and heavy mechanical engineering.

3. There are a lot of important uses of galvanometers with laser scanning systems in civil engineering. This includes material processing, beam designing, crack identifying, beam steering, etc.

4. Galvanometer used in Laser Beam Welding, Laser TVs, and Laser displays. For these applications, a galvanometer is used in a closed-loop system.

5. Galvanometer is designed as a moving coil in a permanent magnet. This mechanism is used in so many applications such as hard disk drives, actuators, etc.

6. Galvanometer is used in different types of meters such as VU Meters, Light Meters, etc.

7. Galvanometer can be used as both an ammeter and voltmeter using with shunt and series resistance.

Application of Galvanometer as Voltmeter and Ammeter

Here, we will know how a galvanometer is used as a voltmeter and ammeter.

Galvanometer as a Voltmeter

When a galvanometer is used as a voltmeter, a very high resistance is connected in series with it. Then the whole circuit is connected in parallel with the power circuit or load circuit. Here, you can see the circuit diagram below. Also, remember that the range of the voltmeter can be varied by the varying resistance value of the series-connected resistor. Higher resistance means higher sensitivity.

Galvanometer as an Ammeter

When a galvanometer is used as an ammeter, very low resistance is connected in parallel with the galvanometer. This is called Shunt Resistor. And the whole circuit is connected in series between the power source and load. Here, you can see the circuit diagram below. Also, remember that the range of the ammeter can be varied by varying the resistance value of the parallel-connected resistor. Here, lower resistance means higher sensitivity.

Galvanometers have several advantages that make them valuable in various applications. Firstly, galvanometers are highly sensitive instruments capable of detecting and measuring small electrical currents accurately. Their precise measurement capabilities make them suitable for tasks requiring precise current monitoring. Additionally, galvanometers have a wide frequency response range, allowing them to measure both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC).
