Optical Fiber Communication Block Diagram

Optical Fiber Communication is the latest and widely used method to transmit information through inferred light and these lights are transmitted through the fiber optic cables. There are mainly two types of optic cables are used - 1. Multi-Mode Optical Fiber Cable 2. Single-Mode Optical Fiber cable. The fiber-optic communication system used for a large distance, negligible electromagnetic interference, high bandwidth signals. In this article, we are going to see the Optical Fiber communication system block diagram. From this block diagram of optical fiber communication system, you can easily understand how a fiber optical system works.

Optical Fiber Communication Block Diagram, block diagram of Optical Fiber Communication

As you see in the above block diagram, the optical fiber communication system has three major and important parts,
  • Transmitter
  • Regenerator or Repeater
  • Receiver

Transmitter in Optical Fiber Communication

The transmitter in an optical fiber communication system has a processor that takes the input signal from the source devices and made it ready to supply to the light transmitter circuit. Generally, the light transmitter circuit consists of an LED(Light Emitting Diode) or laser diode. Inferred LEDs are used for fiber optic communication systems. The light emitter circuit converts the digital electronic signal into lights.

The transmitter circuit uses the light as a carrier wave and it is modulated to carry the digital information. A transmitter circuit always designed in compact, reliable, efficient. The transmitter circuit is responsible for the transmission of high frequency, high bandwidth signals for long-distance. So the transmitter circuit should produce a very stronger signal.

Regenerator or Repeater in Fiber Optic Communication

For long-distance data transmission, it helps a lot. In a long-distance data transmission system, the strength of the signal decreased. So, basically, the main function of a repeater or regenerator is to make the signal stronger. The repeater or regenerator circuit has a signal receiver circuit,  electronic amplifier circuit, and a Signal Transmitter Circuit.

The receiver receives the signal in form of light and converts it into an electronic signal. The electronic amplifier circuit amplifies the signal. And the transmitter circuit again converts the electronic signal into light.

Receiver in Optic Fiber Communication

The main function of the receiver circuit is to receive the signal in form of light and convert it into an electronic signal. Here, in the above block diagram, you can see there are three blocks. The light detector circuit is made by semiconductor devices such as photoconductors or photodiodes or phototransistors. Nowadays, Metal Semiconductor Metal(MSM) photodetectors are also used due to their high sensitivity, easy circuit integration, etc. After that, this signal is amplified by the amplifier circuit. The shaper circuit mainly used to remove the unwanted noise from the signals, demodulate, and prepared it to send to the destination devices.

The whole optical fiber communication system works with digital electronic signals because it provides higher efficiency, easy modulation, demodulation, much more information transmission. If there are analog devices in the source and destination, at first the analog signal is converted into a digital signal at the sender side. Again the digital signal is converted into an analog signal to provide to the analog devices.
