[BEST] Advantages, Applications of FDM or Frequency Division Multiplexing
The important applications of FDM(Frequency Division Multiplexing) are broadcasting, telephone communications, Television (TV) Networks, etc. In this article, you will find a lot of important application of FDM with detailed explanation. You will also find the advantages and disadvantages of FDM.
Applications of FDM
FDM
has more important applications than TDM. Some applications of FDM are given
below.
1.
FDM is used in Radio Broadcasting. Every Radio Station has its own frequency
band. When we turn on our radio then signals from all radio stations are coming
on our radio. We can choose the frequency band by rotating the knob to connect
our radio with a particular radio station.
2.
FDM also used in Television Broadcasting. Here the same concept is used as the
radio broadcasting.
3.
Frequency Division Multiplexing System is used in the telephone system. FDM
helps to transmit multiple phone calls over a single transmission line or a
single link.
4.
Frequency Division Multiplexing System is also used in Satelite Communication
system. FDM helps to transmit the multiple channels of data in satellite
communication.
5.
In our broadband connection system, FDM also used. The FDM system is used in
Digital Subscriber Line or DSL Modems, which helps to transmit a huge amount of
computer data for accessing the Internet over a single transmission line. It is
a very important application of FDM.
6.
FDM is used in stereo Frequency Modulation or FM transmission system.
7.
FDM is also used in Amplitude Modulation or AM radio transmission system.
8.
Frequency Division Multiplexing or FDM system is used for multimedia data such
as video, audio, image transmission.
9.
In earlier days, FDM used in harmonic telegraphy communication system.
10.
In earlier days, FDM used in the cellular telephone system.
Advantages of FDM
The
important advantages of FDM are given below.
1.
Frequency Division Multiplexing or FDM does not need synchronization but TDM or
Time Division Multiplexing needs synchronization. It is an advantage of FDM
over TDM.
2.
FDM provides more latency than TDM.
3.
The demodulation process in FDM is very easy and simple.
4.
Using FDM system a large amount of data can be transmitted than TDM. It is a great advantage of FDM over TDM.
5.
Using FDM system multimedia data can be transferred with very high efficiency
and low noise and distortion.
6.
FDM system has high reliability.
Disadvantages of FDM
Some
disadvantages of FDM are given below.
1.
Frequency Division Multiplexing system needs a carrier wave or carrier signal
but Time Division Multiplexing system does not need carrier signal.
2.
The circuitry for FDM is complex than TDM. FDM requires more hardware than TDM.
3.
The Frequency Division Multiplexing system extremely expensive.
4.
There is intermodulation distortion occurs in FDM.
5.
There is a need of a large number of modulators and filters in FDM.
6.
FDM provides less throughput.
7.
The full bandwidth of a channel cannot be used in the Frequency Division
Multiplexing system.
8.
FDM has not dynamic coordination.
In
Frequency Division Multiplexing System, various signals of different
frequencies are combined and transmitted over a single transmission line. Here
a Carrier wave or carrier signal is used to divide and determined the signal of
different frequencies. An unusual bandwidth which is called Guard Band is used
to separate the signals having different frequencies. Guard Band prevents the
overlapping of signals. Generally, in Frequency Division Multiplexing System,
the bandwidth of the transmission line or the link always greater than the
required bandwidth for transmitting of all signals.
