Applications and advantages of all types of Motor- DC Motors, AC motors, Universal Motors

A motor is an electric machine which can convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. The electrical motor works on the principle of Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. In this post, we will discuss the Applications and Advantages of all types of motor.

There are mainly three types of motor,
  1. DC Motor
  2. AC Motor
  3. Universal Motor
The motor which can run on DC supply is called DC Motor.
The motor which can run on AC supply is called AC Motor.
The motor which can run on both AC and DC supply is called Universal Motor.

Applications and Advantages of all types of DC Motor

Applications of Permanent Magnet DC Motor or PMDC Motor:

  1. Used in Kid's Toys
  2. PMDC motors are used in some compressor.
  3. Used in  old vacuum cleaners
  4. Used in some small gadgets and stationery products
  5. Used in mobile phones for vibration.
  6. You may notice these types of motors are used in CD and DVD drives.

Advantages of Permanent Magnet DC Motor or PMDC Motor:

  1. This type of motor is very cheaper.
  2. A very smaller size of motor can be made
  3. Very low-voltage motors are available

Applications of Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor:

  1. The cooling fans of computers, laptops, and other electronic devices use Brushless DC Motors or BLDC Motors.
  2. There is a huge application of BLDC Motors in Drones.

Advantages of Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor:

  1. These are very energy-efficient motors.
  2. High output efficiency
  3. Very easy speed control

  2. They have a self-regulating speed facility.
  3. Variable speed capacity also.

Applications of DC Shunt Motors:

  1. They are used in DC Fans.
  2. Used in lathe Machines.
  3. In the early days, the DC Shunt motor was used in lifts but nowadays induction motors are used.
  4. DC shunt motors are used in Centrifugal pumps
  5. DC Shunt motors are also used in conveyor belts.

Advantages of DC Shunt Motors:

  1. They have constant speed characteristics or smooth operation.
  2. Speed can be controlled by easy methods.

Application of Compound DC Motor:

  1. They mainly used laboratories for research and other purposes.
  2. They are also used in Reciprocating Machines
  3. In some machine tools, these types of motors are used.

Applications and Advantages of all types of AC Motor

There are mainly two types of AC Motors,
  1. Induction Motor
  2. Synchronous Motor

Applications of Single-Phase Induction motor:

  1. Single-phase induction motors are used in ceiling fans, table fans, etc.
  2. These motors are also used in Refrigerators.
  3. Modern Mixers and other home appliances use single-phase induction motors.
  4. In modern blowers, these types of motors are used.

Advantages of Single-Phase Induction motor:

  1. They have very simple in construction.
  2. High efficiency.
  3. Reliable
  4. Compact in size.

Applications of Three Phase Induction motor:

  1. Nowadays in traction system Induction motors are used.
  2. In heavy engineering industries, these types of motors are used.

Advantages of Three-Phase Induction Motors :

  1. They are self start motors.
  2. They have not any brush mechanism.
  3. Lighter than other motors for the same rating.

Applications of Shaded-Pole Induction Motor:

  1. They are used in some machine tools.
  2. They are used in the refrigerator with the deep freeze fan.

Advantages of Shaded Pole Induction motor:

  1. They have adjustable speed facilities.
  2. It does not need the capacitor for starting.
  3. They have no brush mechanism.

Applications Synchronous Motor:

  1. They are used for power factor improvements.
  2. They are used in analog clocks.
  3. They are also used in tape recorders.

Applications of Universal Motors:

  1. Universal motors are used in hair dryers.
  2. They are also used in vacuum cleaners.

As a student studying electrical engineering or a related field or any individual having a background in electrical engineering, it is important to understand the applications, advantages, and Disadvantages of different types of motors, including DC motors, AC motors, and universal motors.
