An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is a device used to automatically transfer power supply between two sources in the event of a power outage or when the primary source fails. It is commonly used in backup power systems to ensure uninterrupted power supply to critical loads.

A Single Phase ATS is specifically designed for single-phase power systems, where the electrical power is distributed using two wires - a phase (hot) wire and a neutral wire. Single-phase power is commonly used in Domestic and residential settings and for smaller commercial applications.

Connection Procedure


1. Before making the connection, identify the input and output terminals of all the devices. Read the user manual from the manufacturer if required.

2. The output of the energy meter is to be connected to the source 1 terminals of the Transfer Switch through an MCB.

3. The output from the generator is to be connected to the source 2 terminals of the Transfer Switch through an MCB.

4. Now connect both the outputs of the Transfer switch together and then connect to the input of the Distribution board or load you want to connect.

5. The backup generator can be configured as manual or automatic. In the manual configuration, we have to turn on the generator manually when the utility power fails. In the automatic configuration, the generator will automatically turn on when the utility power supply fails. It may need an additional connection. So follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.


Working Principle


The switching Mechanism is the core arrangement in an ATS that allows it to change the power source from the primary (utility) to the secondary (backup generator or another power source) and vice versa. The switching is done automatically based on predefined conditions.

The ATS switch has a controller that is the brain of the ATS. It monitors the primary power supply continuously and automatically initiates the switching process when it detects a failure or abnormality in the primary power source. It also oversees the process of returning to the primary source when it's restored.

The ATS Switch also has Sensing Devices such as voltage and frequency monitors, which help the controller determine the status of the primary power source and the backup source, ensuring a smooth transition between them.

The transfer time is the duration it takes for the ATS to switch from one power source to another. In critical applications, the transfer time is typically kept as low as possible to avoid interruptions to sensitive equipment.

Single Phase ATS is suitable for applications that require up to a single-phase 240V power supply. For larger applications or three-phase power systems, a Three Phase ATS is used.

In summary, a Single Phase ATS is a reliable and essential component in backup power systems for residential and smaller commercial setups, providing seamless power transfer during power outages to keep critical loads running without interruption.
