Proximity Sensor Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure

A proximity Sensor is a device that can sense an object without any physical contact. Basically, it generates an electrical signal when it senses an object. So it is very helpful to sense the object and we can transmit the electrical signal to a remote place. So from a remote place, we can sense an object or count them. For example, in the manufacturing industry, we can detect the products going through the conveyor and count them, and store data automatically in the computer system. Anyway here, in this article, we are going to see wiring diagrams of different types of proximity sensors.

Here, you can see the proximity sensor wiring and connection diagram with different types such as - Three(3) Wire PNP Type, Three(3) Wire NPN Type, Two Wire DC Type, and Two Wire AC Type.

Proximity Sensor Wiring and Connection Diagram

Before going to the Connection Procedure, let's learn about the terminals of the proximity sensor.

The three-wire proximity sensor has three terminals - Voltage Input(Brown Color), Voltage Output(Black Color), and Zero Volt or Common Ground(Blue Color). Remember that the Proximity sensor is an active sensor that requires an external power supply for its work. So, we provide a voltage through its input terminal.

The main difference between the PNP and NPN-type proximity sensors is, that the PNP proximity sensor provides a positive voltage output(+) whereas the NPN type Proximity Sensor provides a Negative Output(-).

The two-wire type proximity sensor has two terminals and it is to be connected in series with the load and power supply. But there should be a minimum amount of current flow that will keep activated the sensor. For the AC two-wire type proximity sensor the polarity is not so much important but in the case of the DC two-wire type, we must take care of the polarity while doing the connection.

Connection Procedure: Three(3) Wire PNP Type
  1. Connect the positive terminal of the power supply to the brown terminal of the sensor.
  2. Connect the negative terminal of the power supply to the blue terminal of the sensor.
  3. Connect the Positive terminal of the load to the black terminal of the sensor.
  4. Connect the negative terminal of the load to the blue terminal of the sensor.

Connection Procedure: Three(3) Wire NPN Type
  1. Connect the positive terminal of the power supply to the brown terminal of the sensor.
  2. Connect the negative terminal of the power supply to the blue terminal of the sensor.
  3. Connect the Positive terminal of the load to the brown terminal of the sensor.
  4. Connect the negative terminal of the load to the black terminal of the sensor.

Connection Procedure: DC Two-Wire Type
  1. Connect the Positive terminal of the power supply to the brown terminal of the sensor.
  2. Connect the Negative terminal of the power supply to the negative terminal of the load.
  3. Connect the Positive terminal of the load to the blue terminal of the sensor.

Connection Procedure: AC Two-Wire Type
  1. Connect the Phase terminal of the power supply to the brown or red terminal of the sensor.
  2. Connect the Neutral terminal of the power supply to the neutral terminal of the load.
  3. Connect the Phase terminal of the load to the blue terminal of the sensor.
