Examples of Electromechanical Devices and their Uses

Some common examples of electromechanical devices are,
  • Strowger Switch
  • Electric Bell
  • Electric Typewriters
  • Clocks
  • Teleprinters
  • Solenoid
  • Relay
  • Electrical Generator
  • Electrical Motor
  • Actuator
  • Crossbar Switch
  • Alternator
  • Bimetallic Strip
  • Electromechanical Television

Electromechanical devices are those where both electrical and mechanical processes happen. The electrical process means the conversion of electrical energy, controlling electrical energy, etc. Whereas the mechanical process means mechanical pressure, force, movement, mechanical energy conversion, etc. Actually, the term 'Electromechanical' mostly implies that it is related to only the device that converts mechanical energy or mechanical movement into electrical energy or electrical energy into mechanical movement. That is not exactly true. Electromechanical devices are not only involved in the conversion but it involved in other useful works.

Now the question is how the electromechanical device works? The electromechanical device uses different types of principles for its operation. Electromagnetism is one of them and even it is mostly used. That is why some electromechanical devices can be called as electromagnetic devices also. Basically, electrical energy is used to generate magnetic energy or magnetic field, and this magnetic field is used to make mechanical movement by attraction or repulsion process. Some electromechanical devices use the heating principle to make a mechanical movement. For example, in a bimetallic strip, an electric current generates heat, and it makes the movement of bimetallic strips.

Electromechanical Devices mostly came in the use from 1910-1945. And these are used in all types of fields from domestic to industrial. Even nowadays in our houses, you will see so many applications.

Some examples of household electromechanical devices are,
  • Refrigerators
  • Washing Machines
  • Calling Bell
  • Dishwashers
  • CD or DVD Players
  • Cutting Machines
  • Mixer Grinders

As I told you before electromechanical devices are not only involved in conversion. Here we can take an example that is an electromechanical relay. An electromechanical relay has a magnetic coil and some mechanical contacts. When an electric supply is applied to the relay, its coil creates a magnetic field that attracts the contacts and forces them to move. So, here we do not covert the energy directly. Here, mechanical movement is used for switching electrical or electronic signals. Of course, a relay can be called as an electromagnetic device also, as here the electromagnetism principle is used.

The generator is involved in the direct energy conversion process. Here mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy. A prime mover is used to rotate the rotor of the generator and it generates electricity. Now you may think converting wind energy, hydro energy into electrical energy we also used generator. Here, I will say here other mechanical devices such as hydro turbines and wind turbines are used to rotate the generator.

The electric bell is an electromechanical device that also uses mechanical movement to generate sound. And this movement is achieved by an electromagnetic coil energized by an electrical power supply.
