Symbols: Rectifier, Inverter, Converter, Chopper

Hey, in this article we are going to see different types of power electronic or power conversion symbols such as Rectifier, Inverter, Converter, and Chopper. So it will help you to read or understand any electrical or electronic drawing that has power converters. Power conversion is the process to convert electrical energy from one form to another form. 

The power conversion process is responsible for changing voltage or frequency or both voltage and frequency, the polarity of the current flow, etc. Power conversion is required for different types of devices, appliances, circuits, and electrical or electronic systems. For example, some electronic devices such as amplifiers, DVD players, monitors, computers, etc require DC Power Supply. But we have an AC power supply as our utility power source. So these devices have an inbuilt rectifier circuit that converts the AC into DC.

Power Converter Generic Symbol

Rectifier Symbol

Here you can see the symbol of rectifier or AC to DC converter. The rectifier is a circuit that converts the alternating current into a direct current. Here, you can see the symbol of the Chopper. A chopper is an electronic circuit that converts the voltage level of DC power which means it steps down the DC voltage. Chopper circuits are built with semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs, SCRs, etc.

DC to AC Converter or Inverter Symbol

Here, you can see the symbol of Inverter. The inverter is an electrical or electronic circuit that converts the direct current into alternating current. Inverter circuits are available in different types such as sine wave inverter, square wave inverter, etc.

AC to AC Converter Symbol

Here, you can see the symbol of AC to AC Converter. AC to AC converters is those which convert the frequency or voltage of the AC power. AC to AC converters are very simple circuits. A step up or step down transformer can be an example of an AC to AC converter that changes the voltage level.
