The PROM or Programmable Read-Only Memory is a digital data-storing device. Of course, it is a semiconductor device. The data in this device can be changed only one time after the manufacture. After changing the data one time, we can not change the data. As its name suggests the data that only can be read can not be written. So, it is used to store permanent data. In most of the cases, the PROM is used to store low-level programs such as firmware or microcodes. It is a very important part of any programming or computing device. In fact, in most of the modern electronic devices, PROM is used.

Generally, all the PROM comes after the manufacturing with all bits reading as 1. Basically, it consists of electronic semiconductor-type fuses. When the PROM has not been programmed all the fuses are in good condition so all the data is to be considered as 1. Burning or blowing of a fuse is to be considered as 0. For example, if a PROM consists of 20 fuses and all are in good condition then all the 20 bits are to be considered as 1. Now, 5 of them are burned now the PROM consists of fifteen data as 1 and five data as 0. 

Generally, the bit cell of the PROM is programmed by applying a high-voltage pulse signal. The PROM is programmed by plugging with a device is called PROM Programmer. In older computers, BIOS(Basic Input/Output System) is built with PROM. Nowadays PROM is replaced by EEPROM. PROM is also called as OTP or One Time Memory.

If we look at the history of PROM. The Programmable Read-Only Memory or PROM was first developed in 1956 by Wen Tsing Chow. As we know the PROM is a permanent memory and data cannot be changed once it is programmed so if an error program or wrong program is stored in the PROM the chip should be replaced by a new one and again programming needs to be done.
