What is Changeover Switch? Wiring and Connection Diagram



A changeover switch is a switching arrangement or device that is used to interchange the source of power supply to an electrical load. There are different types of changeover switches available. Based on the operation it is classified into two types - 1. Manual 2. Automatic. The automatic changeover switch and manual changeover switch built with electrical or electronic circuitry are available in the market as the name of the transfer switch.

Actually, when we talk about a changeover switch, it implies the handle type switch. It is the old type of switch used in older days. Nowadays automatic switches or electrical circuitry are used. This handle type of changeover switch has metallic paths and handles. The metallic paths of the changeover switch are arranged in such a way that they will connect to each other when we change the position of the handle. 

Generally, we can connect two different power sources to the changeover switch and one load. So when we change the position of the handle, the load will disconnect from one source and connect to another source. The handle of the changeover switch can be moved in three positions - source 1, source 2, and off position. When the handle is kept in the off position, the load will disconnect or be isolated from both power sources when we keep the handle in source 1, the load will be connected to source 1 and isolated from source 2. On the other hand, when we keep the handle in the source 2 position, the load will be connected to source 2 and disconnected from source 1. 

This handle-type changeover switch is also available in three types. 

Type 1 - It is a two-pole device that is used for the single-phase power system to connect the neutral and phase.

Type 2 - It is a triple pole device that is used in a three-phase power system and allows to connect the three-phase three-wire terminals.

Type 3 - It is a four-pole device that is used for the three-phase four-wire system that allows to connect all the three phases and neutral.

In this article, we are going to see the connection of this handle type changeover switch - type 1. Other types also work in the same principle.

Here, you can see the changeover switch has a total of eight terminals. Upside four terminals and downside four terminals. Here, we have connected the source 1 upside and source 2 downsides. But you can connect the source 2 upside and source 1 downside. Both of the upside and downside load terminals should be connected in parallel as shown in the above figure. Also, don't forget to connect the earthing or grounding to the body of the panel. electrical safety is must be required. It should be the first priority.

This changeover switch connection will help you to connect both of the energy meter(main primary power source) and generator(secondary power source) for the house wiring. At the load terminal, you should connect the main incoming terminal of the whole house load. You can connect the output of the energy to source 1 and generator to the source 2.
