Subwoofer Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure

A subwoofer is a device that converts low-frequency audio signals(electrical energy) into acoustic or sound energy such as bass. There are two types of subwoofers are available in the market - 1. SVC or Single Voice Coil Subwoofer and 2. DVC or Double Voice Coil Subwoofer. When connecting a subwoofer with an amplifier two things must be considered - resistance or impedance and watt or power. The impedance and watt rating of the subwoofer must be matched with the amplifier.

SVC Subwoofer, DVC Subwoofer

Here, you can see the difference between terminals of an SVC and DVC subwoofer. The SVC subwoofer has a single voice coil so it has two terminals whereas the DVC subwoofer has two voice coils so it has four terminals.

Now, let's see the wiring Diagram

Here, you can see an 80watt, 4-ohm subwoofer is connected to an amplifier rated 80watt, 4 ohm.

Connection Procedure

1. Connect the positive terminal of the subwoofer to the positive terminal of the amplifier.

2. Connect the negative terminal of the subwoofer to the negative terminal of the amplifier.

DVC Subwoofer Wiring Diagram and Connection, Coil in series

As we know that the DVC subwoofer has two pairs of terminals so we need to connect them either in series or parallel before connecting with an amplifier. So in the above diagram, you can see the two coils are connected in series. Remember that if a DVC subwoofer is rated 2 ohm that means each of the coils are has an impedance of 2 ohms. So, as the coils are connected in series the total impedance will be 4 ohms. That is why the subwoofer is connected to an amplifier that has an output impedance of 4ohm.

Connection Procedure

1. Connect the positive terminal of one coil to the negative terminal of the other coil.

2. Connect the positive terminal of the amplifier to the rest positive terminal of the subwoofer.

3. Connect the negative terminal of the amplifier to the rest negative terminal of the subwoofer.

DVC Subwoofer Wiring Diagram - Coil in Parallel

DVC Subwoofer Wiring Diagram and Connection, coil in parallel

Here, you can see the coils are connected in parallel. As the subwoofer rated 2 ohm that means each of the coils are has a 2-ohm impedance so the total impedance will be 1 ohm. That is why it is connected to an amplifier having a rating output impedance 1ohm.

A subwoofer is nothing but a speaker. So you can understand the series and parallel connection of the subwoofer and impedance calculation if you read our article Speaker Connection with Amplifier

Connection Procedure

1. Connect both positive terminals together.

2. Connect both negative terminals together.

3. Connect the positive terminal of the amplifier to the positive terminal of the subwoofer.

4. Connect the negative terminal of the amplifier to the negative terminal of the subwoofer.
