Most Usable Electrical Components Examples, Function, Use



Hi, in this article we are going to see the list of most usable electrical components used in engineering projects, power circuits, control circuits, electrical devices, and equipment, etc. Before, we have discussed electronic components. You can read that article also. Also, note that some components are common for electrical and electronics but there are some components available that only comes under electrical.


What are the electrical components?


Electrical components are those mostly used in electrical circuits or high current, high voltage, and high power. The main difference between the electrical components and the electronic components is, electrical components are used with low to high voltage and power whereas electronic components are used with low voltage and power only.

Resistor


A resistor is a passive electrical component. It can be called as an electronic component also. The main function of a resistor is to oppose the flow of electric current. Generally, in electrical circuit resistors are used for current limiting, voltage dropping, heat production, etc. I think there is no electrical or electronic circuits which does not have Resistor or resistance. Resistor is a widely used electrical or electronic component.


Inductor


An inductor is also a passive electronic or electrical component. The main function of an inductor is to oppose the changes in the flow of current through it. Inductors are used in electrical circuits as current limiting series reactors, reactive power absorbers, voltage balance, electronic filter, voltage booster, etc.


Capacitor


A capacitor is an energy-storing passive electronic or electrical component. The main function of a capacitor is to store the electrical energy in form of an electric charge. Capacitors are used in electrical circuits for power factor improvement, surge protection, reactive power compensation, current bypassing, signal filteration, energey storing etc.


Lamps


Electrical Components - Indicator lamps


Different types of lamps such as indication lamps are also be considered as electrical components. Indication lamps are used in electrical control circuits, motor starter circuits, electrical panels, etc. They are used to indicate different status of the circuit such as whether the system is On, Off or greeting fault or Trip indication. Human can understand what happening in the system.


Transformer


A transformer is a very important electrical machine. The small portable transformers can be called as electrical components. The main function of a transformer is to transfer the electrical power from one circuit to another circuit by changing voltage level and keeping constant the power and frequency. Transformers are used in electrical circuits for voltage step up or step down purposes. 


Fuse


Fuse is a protective component. Fuse is mainly used to give protection against overload or overcurrent fault. Some specially designed Fuses are can give protection against short circuit fault also. In older days fuse was only one most important protective device for electrical circuits.


Battery


Electrical Components



A battery is an energy storing device. Small compact batteries are can be called as an electrical component. Battery mainly uses to store electrical energy and utilize it when main power is not available. For backup power supply or to operate portable devices battery is very helpfull.

Choke Coil


The choke coil is also an inductive coil. The main function of a choke coil is to block high frequency current or alternating current and allow the direct current. A choke coil also can boost the voltage for a certain time. Choke coils are used in tube lights, electrical filter circuits, etc.
