[Main] Difference between Cell and Battery Explained



The main difference between Cell and Battery is, a cell is a device which can generate electrical energy by creating a chemical reaction inside it whereas the battery is the connection of multiple cells. There are many important differences between Battery and Cell which are explained below.

As you see in the above figure the electric cell consists of two electrodes or plates, one is a positive plate and another is negative plate. Remember that the above figure shows the lead acid battery and cells. The two plates of the cell are separated by a separator. The whole structure of the cell is immersed in a mixture of sulphuric acid and distilled water. You can also see the battery consists of four cells connected in series. so, the total output voltage of the battery is the summation of voltage of each cell.

An Electrical Cell is a device which can generate electrical energy creating chemical reactions or convert chemical energy into electrical energy.
The electric battery is a device which consist no. of electric cells connected in series or parallel combination.
The nominal voltage of an electric cell usually between 1.2V and 3.7V.
Lead acid cells have the capacity of 1.2 to1.5V but Li-Ion cell has the capacity of 3.6V
The batteries of 1.5v to 52V are available. Even nowadays more than 52V batteries come in the market.
An electric cell can deliver electrical power for a short time.
A battery can deliver electrical power for a long time as it contains no of cells connected together.
A single electric cell is used in clocks, stopwatches, etc.
The battery used in everywhere such as  mobile phones, Cars, Inverters, emergency lights and many devices.

Cell VS Battery


1.The size of the electric cell is small. The size of the battery is bigger than the electric cell.

2.The price of Electric Cells is cheap. The price of the electric battery is more than the electric cell.

3.As the electrical cell has is a single unit device that is why it light in weight. As the battery consists no. of cell inside it so the weight of the battery is heavier than the electric cell. More cells means more weight.

4.An electric cell contains two electrodes and an electrolyte inside it whereas the battery contains no. of cells connected in series and parallel combination inside it.

5.An electric cell is a single unit device but a battery may contain a single cell only or may contain multiple cells. For example, AA-Sized alkaline battery consists of a single cell but 6V, 9V, 12V alkaline batteries are consists of multiple cells.

6.Most of the batteries are packed with wires, connectors and protection modules but there is no protection module, connectors, and wires with electric cell. Even the electric cell with one wire is called a battery.
