Earthing Advantages Purpose, Necessity in Electrical System

The main advantages of earthing in the electrical system are current and voltage balancing, electrical shock prevention, reducing electrical noise, etc. The main purpose of earthing in the electrical system is to balance current or voltage. The main necessity of earthing in electrical equipment is to protect humans or animals from electrical shock. Read the full article to know more important advantages, purpose, and necessity of earthing in the electrical system with explanations.

Electrical Earthing is mainly done in two places and is classified into two types according to the place of earthing which are explained below.

Equipment Earthing

When the metallic body of electrical equipment or the noncurrent carrying parts of the equipment is connected to the earth then it is called Equipment Earthing.

Electrical Earthing, Equipment Earthing

The main objective of Equipment earthing is to prevent electrical shock and prevent equipment failure. The main purpose of equipment earthing is to provide a low-resistance path for electrical fault currents to flow, ensuring that excessive voltages or currents do not build up on the equipment or its enclosures.

Sometimes the Equipment earthing is used to dissipate static charges that may accumulate on equipment, preventing electrostatic discharges that could damage sensitive electronic components.

System Earthing

When the neutral point of any electrical system or the alternator and transformer is connected to the earth then it is called System Earthing. The main objective of system earthing is System balancing, surge protection, failure, etc.

Advantages of Earthing in Electrical System

1. The main advantage of earthing is current or voltage balancing. The neutral point of the alternator and transformer is connected to the earth because if there is unbalance load is connected between the three phases of the alternator or transformer with respect to the neutral point then a unbalance current will flow which made the total system unhealthy. So when the neutral point is connected to the earth it balances the current and voltage between the three phases.

2. The total earthing system acts as a conductor also. In the earlier DC transmission system, the only positive terminal was connected from the generation plant to the load center and the negative terminal of both sides i.e. generation plant and load center were connected to the earth. So there the earthing system was acting as a negative conductor.

3. Another advantage of Earthing is, as the earthing system act as a conductor so if there is any fault in the neutral conductor we can use the earthing as the neutral conductor and we can drive any load by connecting it between the phase conductor and earth.

4. The earthing system also helps to detect any fault in phase and neutral conductors.

5. The earthing system helps to discharge the overvoltage which produces suddenly due to the lightning which may damage the costly electrical appliances.

6. The earthing system also gives surge protection.

7. Another important advantage of earthing is, it gives protection against electrical shock.

8. Earthing also helps to eliminate the risk of fire or explosion during insulation faults.

Purpose and Necessity of Earthing in Electrical System

As we know that there are two types of electrical earthing according to the place of Earthing. They both have different purposes for earthing which are explained below.

Purpose and Necessity of Equipment Earthing

The main purpose of equipment earthing is to give protection against electrical shock. In the Equipment Earthing, the noncurrent carrying part or metallic body of electrical equipment is connected to the earth so if there is any fault occurs and the noncurrent carrying parts touch the phase conductor then the current will flow through the earthing to the ground and provide the protection to human from electrical shock.

Purpose and Necessity of System Earthing

The main purpose of the system earthing is to balance the current or voltage during the fault condition which is explained before. Other Purposes of system earthing are overvoltage protection, surge protection, fault detection, etc.
