Bilge Pump Wiring Diagram and Connection in Boat

Hey, in this article, we are going to see the Bilge Pump Wiring Diagram and Connection in Boat. We will learn how the Bilge is connected with the float switch, three-way auto/manual switch, normal manual switch, and battery. A bilge pump is a type of water pump that is used to remove water or other liquids that accumulate in the bilge of a ship or boat.

Bilge pumps can be connected to a boat in different ways. The two most popular methods of connecting the bilge pump are - 1. Connection with a Three Way Switch or 2. Connection with a manual On/Off switch.

The three-way switch provides three functions, manual On, manual Off, and Automatic On/Off. On the other hand, when we use a manual switch, we can turn on the pump whenever we want but the pump is subjected to always be turned on in the auto mode.

Here, you can see the wiring diagram for the connection of a bilge pump with a three-way switch, float switch, and battery.

Here, you can see the main input power supply from the battery is connected to the three-way switch and then it is connected to the bilge pump through the float switch. The three-way switch has two output terminals. One terminal is directly connected to the pump and the other terminal is connected through the float switch.

The three-way switch has three operating positions,
  1. When the switch is kept in the 'Off' position, the power supply will be disconnected from the both pump and float switch.
  2. When the switch turn to the 'On' position the pump will be directly connected to the battery and it will turn On. The pump will run until we again keep the switch in the 'Off' position.
  3. When the switch is kept in the 'Auto' position, the float switch will get the power supply. In this case, the pump will turn On and turn Off automatically according to the sensing of the float switch. When there is water in the bilge, the float switch will activate the pump and when there is no water in the bilge the float switch will turn Off the pump.

Here, you can see the connection diagram of a bilge pump with a float switch and a manual On/Off switch.

Here you can see the pump is connected to the battery through a float switch directly. So the pump will always be in the auto mode. The manual switch allows us to turn on the pump anytime. Remember that when the pump is running in the auto mode we cannot turn on the pump by operating the manual switch.

So, the difference between using a three-way switch and a manual switch is, when we use the three-way switch we can run the pump in both auto and manual mode but when we use a manual switch, the pump is always operated in the auto mode, we can only turn On or turn Off the pump manually when it is in the off condition in the auto mode.
