What is DPST Switch? Double Pole Single Throw Switch


A DPST switch or Double Pole Single Throw Switch is a type of switch that two inputs and two outputs. Each of the inputs has one corresponding output. But both inputs are isolated to each other, same as both outputs are isolated to each other. It works with two different circuits. It only provides the switching function either on or off. Both of the input-output pair works simultaneously. 

For example, we named as input 1 with corresponding output 1 and input2 with corresponding output 2. So when the switch is turned on, at the same time the input 1 will be connected to the output 1, and input 2 will be connected to the output 2. But the input 1 will never connect to the output 2 and input 2 never connect to the output 1.

Any electrical power supply or load has a minimum of two terminals. As the DPST switch allows two inputs and two outputs, so you can operate a single load with a single power supply or two different loads with two different power supplies.

Here, we will connect two different loads with two different power supplies.

Here, you can see the LED1 is connected to the battery 1 and LED 2 is connected to the Battery 2. So, you can consider the LED1 as load 1, LED 2 as load 2, battery 1 as source 1, and battery 2 as source 2. So when we turn on the switch both LEDs will be turned on together. When we turned off the switch both LEDs will be turned off together.

If we talk about the application and uses of the DPST switch. It does not have so much applications. It is used in rare cases.
