Practical Examples of Electrical Energy Sources and their Use



Electrical energy is a form of energy that can be derived as a result of the movement of electrons. Electrical energy is transferred in form of the flow of current with the presence of electrical potential or voltage. Electrical energy is a type of kinetic energy. It is clean energy and very easy to convert into another form of energy. Electrical energy can be get from many sources directly or by converting other sources of energy. In this article, we are going to know examples of electrical energy or electrical energy sources. These electrical energy examples are can be observed around us.

Some common examples of electrical energy sources are,

  1. Battery
  2. Solar Cell
  3. Piezoelectric Device
  4. Generator with Wind Turbine
  5. Generator with Water Turbine
  6. Alternator

Battery


Example of Electrical Energy Source: Battery


The battery is the direct source of energy. The battery does not generate electricity, it stores the electricity. Once the electrical energy is stored in the battery, we can directly use electrical energy from the battery until it got discharged. The battery provides power in the form of a direct current. To store electricity in a battery we need a well-designed charger circuit that provides a power output appropriate for the battery. The main advantages of battery are, we can use it anywhere, it is compact and portable, it does not make pollution.


Solar Cell


The solar cell is also a direct source of electrical energy. This means we can get electrical energy directly from the solar cell when solar or sun rays fall upon it. Basically, a solar cell converts solar energy into electrical energy. It also provides power in the form of direct current. Solar energy is a green and clean energy source it does not pollute the environment. Proper voltage and current are generated by connecting multiple single solar cells in series or parallel connections. Of course, if they are connected in parallel, the voltage remains the same but the current capacity increases, and when they are connected in series, the Current remains the same but the voltage increases. The main disadvantage of the solar cell is, we cannot use it anytime as in the dark, it cannot generate energy.


Piezoelectric Device or Transducer


Piezoelectric Transducers are those which produce an electrical signal when pressure is applied to them. But they generate electrical energy in a very smaller amplitude that cannot be used to drive any load. Or we cannot use as a conventional regular source of electrical energy. They are only used for sensing purposes or as a transducer. Although they are tiny devices but are very helpful for some circuits.


Generator with Wind Turbine


It is used in wind power plants. It converts wind energy into electrical energy. The turbine act as a prime mover for the generator. When airflow falls upon the turbine it rotates and also rotates the generator also. Basically, these are installed at a height so airflow can rotate the wings of the turbine. As the turbine is also connected to the generator it also rotates and generates electricity.


Generator with Water Turbine


It is used in hydropower plants. It also generates electricity using the energy from water flow. Here, generally, water flows from a high place to a lower place and in between the turbine is installed.

Electrical Heating


An electrical heater is a device that converts electrical energy into heat or thermal energy. There are huge applications of electric heating such as humidity control, cooking, molding, welding, etc. There are different types of heating such as direct heating, indirect heating, ARC heating, and many more.


Lighting


LED lights, fluorescent tube lights, and mercury vapor lamps are examples of converting electrical energy into light energy. Electrical lighting system consume very less energy and provides a very high efficient output than other lighting system.


Air Conditioning


For, air conditioning purposes also electrical energy is required. To operate the compressor, cooling fans, heat pumps, motors, etc electrical energy is required.


Pumping and Lifting


For pumping and lifting purposes also, electrical energy is required to operate pumps, lifting machines, etc. Because they are mostly built with electrical motors. For information, electrical motors are the most power-consuming load in this world.


Telecommunication


In the telecommunication system, for signal generating, converting, processing, and transferring purposes, electrical energy is required. Here electrical energy is converted into different types of electromagnetic signals.

Nowadays, more than 80% of our daily useful work can be done with electrical energy. The main advantages of electrical energy are, easy to convert, easy to transfer, easy to utilize, etc.
