Why Preamplifier must be used before Power Amplifier?

preamplifier vs power amplifier

Hey, today we are going to know why a Preamplifier must be used before Power amplifier and also the function, use, and application of preamplifier. In an audio system, both preamplifier and power amplifiers are used. We can't provide signals from a microphone or any analog audio sensor to the power amplifier, we must be used the preamplifier before the power amplifier.

What is Preamplifier?

The preamplifier is an electronic circuit or device which is suitable for the amplification of electronic signals in low range.

When an electrical or electronic signal is created by a sensor or transducer, first, it is amplified by the preamplifier. Then that signal is fed to the power amplifier or any other device. Basically, a preamplifier starts the initial amplification after receiving the signal from physical world.

Characteristics of Preamplifier

1. An ideal preamplifier has high input impedance and low output impedance.

2. It will have constant gain and linear in nature.

3. Preamplifiers are generally current sensitive, charge sensitive in nature.

4. Preamplifiers can not amplify signal into a very high amplitude, but they able to amplify signals that can be easily used for the next stage.

Function of Preamplifier

The main function of the preamplifier is to remove noise, distortion and amplifying of raw electronic signals coming from analog sensors, transducers, etc.

The first objective of using a preamplifier is to remove noise, interference from electronic signals than amplifying those signals.

The preamplifier also takes more than one signal from multiple sources and route them to a single amplifier or output.

Difference Between Preamplifier and Amplifier

1. The preamplifier is an electronic device that takes input signals from the analog sensors, microphone, etc and prepares that signal or next stage amplification whereas the amplifier or power amplifier takes signals from the preamplifier and amplifying it to drive the heavy load such as a speaker.

2. The preamplifier can take input signals from multiple sources whereas the power amplifier takes input signals from only one source generally from the preamplifier.

3. The main object of the preamplifier is to prepare a signal for the next stage amplification by removing noise, interferences whereas the main objective of the power amplifier is to amplify the signal at the high range to drive the heavy load.

4. The preamplifier has constant gain and linear in nature but a power amplifier may not have constant gain.

Preamplifier Applications

1. In any audio system, the preamplifier is used to prepare the input audio signal for the next stage amplification.

2. Preamplifiers are used in the communication system at the receiver end to remove noise, interference from the receiving signals.

3. Preamplifiers are used with analog sensors, transducers such as microphones, proximity sensors to increase their output.

4. Preamplifiers are used in some devices such as DJ Mixers, Sound cards, Equilizer Machines, etc.

Why Preamplifier must be used before Power Amplifier?

Power Amplifiers only focus to amplify the electronic signal at the high range they not able to remove noise, interference from the signal. For the high rate amplification of the electronic signal, a noise-free, strengthen electronic signal need to give to the power amplifier. But the output of the analog sensors, transducers, microphones, etc not suitable for the input of power amplifier because they produce only weak, noise, interference embedded signals.

So to prepare the signal for the input of the power amplifier, the preamplifier is used. If the preamplifier is not connected before the power amplifier then the output of the power amplifier will be noisy and distorted. Also, the preamplifier helps to balance the gain.
