The Isolation Transformer is a specially designed transformer that is used to isolate two different electrical circuits. The Isolation Transformer is mainly used to isolate the load or powered device from the power supply. Here you will know the Applications, Advantages, and Disadvantages of Isolation Transformers.


The transformer has two windings one is primary winding and another is Secondary winding. There is no electrical connection between the primary and secondary winding. The transformer transforms power from the primary winding to the secondary winding in the principle of electromagnetic induction. As there is no electrical connection between the two windings so the transformer can be used for isolation purposes.

Generally, In a normal transformer, the primary and secondary windings(which have different no. of turns) are typically wound on the same magnetic core. The primary winding is connected to the power source, while the secondary winding is connected to the load. This configuration allows for voltage transformation. In an isolation transformer, the primary and secondary windings(which may have the same no. of turns) are still wound on a shared magnetic core, but they are electrically isolated from each other. There is no direct electrical connection between the input and output sides, ensuring complete electrical isolation.


Isolation Transformer Applications



1. The main application of the Isolation Transformer is, to make the isolation between a power supply and a powered circuit or powered device for the safety purpose.

2. Isolation Transformer is used to transform electrical power between two circuits that are not connected electrically to each other. Those two circuits are may have the same voltage level or different voltage levels.

3. Isolation transformers are can be used as Pulse Transformers.

4. Isolation transformers are used for computer network design. Here isolation transformer act as Pulse Transformer.

5. Sometimes the Isolation Transformer is used in electrical circuits as well as an electronic circuit to provide protection against Electrical shock.

6. Isolation transformers are also used in electronic circuits as well as electrical circuits and some sensitive devices to reduce electrical noise.

7. Isolation Transformer is used to block ground loop interference in a circuit.

8. The isolation transformer is used in power supply circuits in sensitive devices such as Computer, Oscilloscope, Medical Devices

9. Isolations Transformers are used in electrical and electronic testing devices.

10. Isolation transformers are used in communication circuits and Radars.




Advantages of Isolation Transformer



Some advantages of Isolation Transformers are given below. 

1. Isolation Transformer can work at High Frequency, which is why it is also used as a pulse transformer.

2. Isolation Transformer can be used for very high voltage isolation.

3. High efficiency.




Disadvantages of Isolation Transformer



Some Disadvantages of Isolation Transformers are given below.

1. When the Isolation Transformer operates as Pulse Transformer and it operates at a low frequency there is distortion produced in the secondary or output waveform.

2. When the isolation transformer operates at the DC pulse signal, the saturation property of the core reduces.

3. Isolation Transformer is specially designed, which is why it is costlier than a normal transformer.





How Isolation Transformer Provide Protection against Electrical Shock?


We know that in our electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system neutral is connected to the ground. So when a person touches phase or live wire standing on the ground, then the person will be shocked. Because in this case, the current flowing through the body to the ground and complete the circuit.

As you see in the above figure, a person touched the live wire and the current flowed through the body of the person, therefore, the person gets an electric shock.




If we connect an Isolation transformer which has the turns ratio 1:1 then we will get the output voltage same as the input voltage. But as the windings of the transformer are not electrically connected, so there is no chance of electrical shock because of the absence of the Ground.

As you see in the above figure the person touched the output terminal of the isolation transformer but he does not get any electrical shock because he was completely isolated from the main supply by the isolation transformer.
